Thank you for donating to migrants in difficult situations and supporting our work.
This year the need for counceling and economical support has been substantial. Already year 2018 we distributed about 4000 euros more economical support than the previous year, which makes altogether about 10 500 euros. The same trend has continued this year. The majority of these expenses consists of family reunification costs, residence permit fees, costs of juridical processes and travel expenses. As previous years, the network has given open and free counceling in Helsinki in the context of Coffee without Borders and in Tampere, where a reception was opened last spring due to growing need. Nationwide counceling phone and email have also been contacted more and more.
We couldn’t support migrants and their struggles without membership fees and donations. They form the bulk of our income, and distributing economical support is not possible without these incomes. Thereby we request that you will to continue as a donor of Free Movement network or as a support member of Oikeudet Ilman Rajoja organisation! Especially we hope monthly donations since they enable supporting migrants in a planned and equal fashion, and secure our long-term work to defend their rights. Yet, each membership fee and even the smallest donations are of great help – you can freely chose the way to support migrants that is most suitable for you. Big thanks for all who have already paid their membership fee of year 2019!
During spring 2019 a series of trainings was organised in order to support counceling work in Tampere. The project was funded by Kansan Sivistysrahasto. Knowledge on the changes of law and best practices that was generated in these trainings will be shared with asylum seekers and their supporters by making a guide book and internet comic, for which we are currently seeking additional funding.
Besides counceling and economic supporting the network has continued its other activities during this year. We have been actively involved in work against deportations in collaboration with other actors. In the spring we spoke out concerning racist and inappropriate way of acting that some of the officials of Helsinki police show towards asylum seekers. As before, Coffee without Borders offers a weekly space for encounters, discussions and planning our work in Helsinki. In Tampere there is no regular Café, but in February a discussion and poem event was organised adjacent to Signal n:o 3 publication event, and in May Coffee without Borders visited Naapurijurtta in Hervanta. Similar events will be organised in Tampere in the Autumn. Furthermore, the fourth number of Signal – writings on freedom of movement has been underway during the year, and it will be printed in Autumn. In this number, there will be for example a comic on asylum interview, which will be the first story in a comic album under planning concerning the problems of legalizing one’s stay in Finland. In family reunification cases burocracy and travels cost a lot, and each family is responsible for paying these costs themselves. People who flee from crisis areas and have lost their homes have often difficulties in finding the funds needed.
