Panel Discussion

Tampere Social Forum

The Finnish Labour Museum Werstas, Gallery Bertel, 2nd floor

May 29th from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Organised by Free Movement Network Tampere / Vapaa Liikkuvuus Tampere

What is happening at the Finnish and European borders? How are the recent changes in the Alien’s Act and other legislation affecting asylum seekers and other migrants? How to support migrants, defend human rights and oppose the racist immigration policies of the right-wing government?

In the discussion panel three experts will discuss topical issues concerning migration in Finland and Europe. Researcher Jaana Palander from the Migration Institute of Finland will talk about the situation of migrants in Finland amidst the tightening migration and asylum policies. Peace researcher and sporadic activist Anitta Kynsilehto will give an overview of the pushback law enacted at the Eastern border of Finland and discuss its problems. Researcher and activist Ville Laakkonen will focus on the European context to which Finnish border politics and legislation are connected. Together the panelists will also discuss how the civil society has responded to these human rights setbacks and explore future possibilities and prospects.

Free Movement is a network of activists in Finland promoting universal freedom of movement and the realization of fundamental rights regardless of people’s status and background. Tampere group of the network has been recently re-established and is welcoming new members. More information at the end of the event.

The discussion is in English. Finnish translation is available if needed.
