Demonstration 30.11. Open the Borders – Safe Routes for All!

The first border crossing points at the Finnish-Russian border were closed a year ago, and as of December 15, 2023, the border has been entirely shut. This closure, combined with the recent acceptance of the pushback law, poses a severe threat to those seeking safety and asylum. We cannot allow this to continue.

Our Demands:

1. Open the Border Crossing Points! The closure harms people on the move and communities across Finland.

2. Respect the Right to Asylum! Finland must uphold international law and establish a humane asylum policy that protects everyone.

3. No to Push-Backs! The pushback law must be repealed, and Finland must restore its commitment to the rule of law and human rights.

The government hasn’t provided a clear rationale for the border closure, resorting instead to unfounded claims of “security threats.” This narrative is racist and stigmatizes refugees. These actions reflect the broader pattern of EU migration policies that prioritize citizens’ security over humanity, criminalizing those seeking safety and further entrenching structural racism.

Bring your friends and join us in demanding an end to these harmful policies. Together, we can demand open borders, the repeal of the pushback law, and safe, humane routes for all those seeking safety.

Join us in standing up for human rights and dignity!

This event is organized by concerned individuals, Free Movement Network, Turvapaikanhakijoiden tuki ry and Amnesty International Finland.

We stand for compassion, justice, and the fundamental human right to seek safety. We believe that every person deserves dignity and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our commitment to solidarity means standing against racism and xenophobia in all forms, advocating for humane migration policies that prioritize the well-being of individuals and communities. Together, we strive for a world where borders do not dictate our humanity.

We will not tolerate racism, homo- and transphobia, sexism, ableism, or any other form of discrimination and hate directed at individuals based on their personal characteristics. We ask everyone to respect one another and refrain from making assumptions about anyone’s background, gender, sexual orientation, religion or abilities.
